Mesquite
There are millions of acres of mesquite
ecosystem across the Southwest United States. Mesquite trees grow very quickly and can burrow their
roots down to the water table – as far as 190 feet. These
drought-tolerant, abundant local trees produce a floor that is as unique
in character and tough as Texas! Mesquite, sometimes also known as
Texas Ironwood, is a wood high in character, and its color ranges from
light brown to a dark reddish brown. Its hot, dry environment produces
a flooring material that is 82% harder and 65% more stable than Northern
red oak. High dimensional stability means that mesquite is less
susceptible to moisture damage than other woods. This dense and very
strong wood comes in plank and strip flooring of various widths
(although the shrublike dimensions of the tree limit its width), and
beautiful end-grain blocks. The blocks are particularly striking when
patterned with a darker or lighter wood. There are also species of
mesquite called Mexican mesquite, which tend to have somewhat different,
lighter colors.
